The Giraffe Manor is undoubtedly one of the few spots in Nairobi that I am yet to explore, and it is presently number one on my Kenyan bucketlist. I will be making my reservation for afternoon tea sometime in May, although they always seem to be fully booked! Understandably so, given the unique opportunity to spot the resident Rothschild giraffe who are known to visit every morning and evening, and you’ve likely seen the endless social media pictures of them poking their long necks in through a window as patrons settle in for breakfast. Come on…who wouldn’t want to experience that!
Owned by The Safari Collection, this boutique luxury hotel will be featured in episode 3 (season 1) of Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond The Lobby on BBC Two (home of Top Gear and The Travel Show). Journalist Giles Coren and chef Monica Galetti are hosted at the manor as they give viewers an exclusive behind-the-scenes access to this unique property where wildlife conservation combines with top-tier accommodation and service to offer guests the ultimate in interactive, adventurous luxury. I am also writing about this because this very subject was the topic of discussion at last weekend’s brunch with friends, and I for one am absolutely curious to see what it takes to run such a property.
I will try not to throw any spoilers but in the hour long episode, you will see the aforementioned hosts immerse themselves in the dining experience, interview owners Mikey & Tanya Carr-Hartley as well as delve into the logistics of running the Giraffe Manor. Oh, and they also get to explore the manor’s sister company, Sasaab Lodge in Samburu and…well, you will just have to watch the episode to find out!
PS: Episode one features Singapore’s mega-large Marina Bay Sands while episode two is all about the modernist eco-hotel, Mashpi Resort.
